STYLES
As we all travel the journey of life, we reach milestones in our lives. These milestones are a measurement certified by the satisfaction of our individual accomplishments. In some cases and individual’s accomplishments define them and in some cases elevate that person to the status of an Icon. When one enters this realm, they become Iconic and will forever be identified by a singular name. When you hear the name Frank….Cher….Tiger….Prince….Gaga…Evel…Santa, Bigfoot, you know right away who they are and that they are all Icons.
The Edge is privileged that we have an icon in our midst. He is the man, the myth, the legend. A riddle wrapped in an enigma. And in the footsteps of the Icons before him he is known simply and only as Styles.
Born and raised in Southern California Styles epitomizes that easy going laid back “Southern California” personality and lifestyle. Inspired by his older brother who introduced him to the entire motorcycle riding lifestyle and culture Styles begin riding at an early age and he has just soaked it right up from day one. Riding and racing dirt bikes was his life. When he hit his early 20’s he started riding Harley’s. “Man, everyone around me was riding Harley’s” states Styles. “I didn’t want to be left behind so I made it my goal to do whatever it took to save the money so I can buy my first Harley and ride.”
In the early years Styles was just as active in tearing bikes down and rebuilding them. “Man I loved it. I was so hooked. I don’t know if I liked riding bikes more than I liked tearing them apart and rebuilding them” says Styles. “Riding bikes is all I wanted to do. Now I’m 56 years old and I pretty much stopped riding dirt when was in my late 20s’. My wife and I have two sons now, one is 16 the other is 18 and I would love to get back into riding dirt with them. My oldest is riding and he just loves it. Being around motorcycles all my life it has created a strong connection in my family. Something we all love to do”
Styles goes by one name and one name only. Of course, there is a first and last name but that is a closely guarded family secret and will forever remain a mystery. But the question just begs to be asked, how did you get the name Styles? As Styles tells the story “In my early 20’s I got into the business of cutting hair. I got my license and become a professional “Vidal Sassoon” trained hairstylist. I then started cutting hair for a living. I worked out of a few high-end salons and did house calls all over Southern California. Every day I would load up my bag and hop on my bike and ride to my appointments. It was a fun time back then. While I was riding, I started attending bike events and going on rides. I was introduced to the MC world and I was given the name Styles. And pretty much the rest is history.”
When Styles hit his early 30’s he was married and with marriage he began to move into a new profession. One of his riding brothers introduced him into the world of restaurant management and the food service business. “I have studied martial arts ever since I was 10 years old. So, my martial arts background got me some jobs bouncing part time at a few places” says Styles. “It was fun. It was different for sure. I then was promoted and began working as a manager of some restaurants in the S. California area.”
The younger of Style’s two sons had food allergies. As a result, Doctors’ then diagnosed that he was a Type 1 Diabetic. “When my wife I and I were given the news it really knocked us back” says Styles. “Immediately we had to make some big changes. Changes not just for our son but changes for the entire household and family. The kid is doing great. He has a great positive attitude. I am so very proud of him in dealing with this disease.”
Styles has been friends with Russ for 15 plus years. When Styles learned about the ride and that one of the goals was to do fundraising for children related charities Styles jumped at the chance to be a part of it. “Oh ya, I’ve known Russ for a long time” says Styles. “When Russ told me about doing this ride I was sold. If we can ride bikes and raise money for some charities and make a difference in the lives of kids and their families then I am all about that. So, just put me on a highway and show me a sign.”
